Charles Bayfield grew up on the north coast of Cornwall, attended the local comprehensive school and studied German literature in Birmingham. After a string of dead end jobs in Hamburg and London, he found work as an advertising copywriter.

Having spent most of his adult life in the down at heel London suburb of Cricklewood, he has encountered plenty of characters whose stories furnish this book.

He currently lives with his family in Tasmania.
